This is the lyrical analysis of the chosen song Tessellate. Upon research into the song, I discovered the meaning of the title Tessellate:
Tessellation is the process of creating a two-dimensional plane using the repetition of a geometric shape with no overlaps and no gaps. ,And example of triangular tessellation is seen below, as referenced in the song: 'triangles are my favorite shapes' and the line 'toe to toe, back to back...'.
Upon more research on the lyrics and the track, I saw a quote from the front man of Alt J, Joe Newman, which read 'this song is about the lingering of an old flame and physical intimacy shared with that particular individual'. With consideration to this, we decided to base the narrative on this idea of a remaining romance from the perspective of the protagonist, exploring his emotions upon the situation and 'lingering flame' that still exsists. Further addition to the narrative, we considered forming a 'love triangle' which we can portray through the use of an additional character or antagonist in the narrative. As there will be no sound other than the soundtrack, thus will have to display this through the means of visuals; a challenging task.
An inter-textual reference can be made from these lyrics, as there is a reference to the movie 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. The lyrics refer to the iconic scene in th film where there is a shoot-out in the graveyard in a search between the three men for money hidden in one of the graves. This could be used to represent the conflict of the complex three-way relationship between the characters, yet it will be possible to have a display of the film in the music video.
